Home tour: A relaxed, Aussie-inspired Singapore house with an alfresco breakfast and barbecue spot

Originally at home in Australia, this couple brought elements of the laid-back Aussie lifestyle into their refurbished semi-terraced house

With its breezy layout, inviting outdoor spaces, and mix of European and Australian-inspired elements, this semi-terraced house holds its own on the coveted outskirts of Orchard Road. Mosh Interior founder Shermaine Ong oversaw the renovation of the 30-year-old property, describing the result as “a little bit like a colonial black-and-white house and a little bit like a modern Australian home”.

The rather extensive renovation required most of the existing interiors to be torn down and then altered to suit the young couple and their newborn. The owners, originally based in Australia, approached Mosh Interior to evoke “a European feel and a laid-back, homely design” inspired by their previous dwelling.

The doors and windows were extended to let in additional light and views of the surrounding gardens, and window shutters inspired by classic European architecture were worked into the design, along with a pared-back palette that enhances the bright and airy interiors.

Often an afterthought, the outdoors of this property were instead designed with great care. The spacious garden fronting the house was brought to life by the husband himself, who turned out to be “quite the handyman. On the other side of the home, the backyard houses a swimming pool next to a barbecue and breakfast spot, fitted with outdoor furniture from Australian brand King Living. The inclusion of this area was of particular importance to the owners, their love of relaxed barbecues harking back to their roots Down Under.

Outdoor dining and relaxed barbecues are made possible with the Quay Ceramic Dining Table, Quay Outdoor Woven Dining Chairs, and Delta Outdoor Circle.

The humidity-resistant pieces that can be spotted here include the Delta Outdoor Circle near the pool as well as various pieces from the Quay Outdoor series framing the barbecue-cum-breakfast corner: the Quay Ceramic Dining Table, Quay Outdoor Woven Dining Chairs, and a set of Quay Outdoor Sofas. “We often opt for King Living pieces as they are timeless,” Ong says. “They focus on simplicity, sophistication and functionality. This goes with our design philosophy: we want to design homes for longevity, not short-term trendiness.”

Entering the abode, brand-new white marble flooring sets the tone for a luxurious yet understated ambience. The owners’ cherished art pieces are hung along the spiral staircase, vibrant and eye-catching against the home’s white walls and updated black railing.

Downstairs, the kitchen and adjacent bar form the heart of the common areas. The former was wholly reconfigured, transformed into an open-concept kitchen with a palette of navy blue and white, and the addition of a polished island top from Dekton.

Next door, the bar-cum-dining room makes for the ideal entertainment spot, with a touch of Australian beachside charm exuded by the rattan bar stools. Aspen Dining Chairs from King Living are arranged around a custom dining table crafted by Mosh Interior.

More intimate gatherings take place in the living room and the family room upstairs. “When we source furniture for our projects, we look for clean lines, sophistication, and clever functionality,” Ong shares. “One piece we wanted for this project was a pared-back sofa with some detailing and a low back to avoid blocking the view. The modular Max Sofa from King Living, with its flip-up headrest, strikes the perfect balance of beauty and function.” The sofa is complemented by a set of Fleur Lounge Chairs and an American walnut and marble Crescent Coffee Table downstairs. The same sofa and table were joined by a pair of King Boulevard Armchairs upstairs.

Pieces from the Australian furniture brand can also be spotted in the owners’ breezy master suite, including the Serenade Storage Bed, which Ong shares “can be lifted for easy access to the storage space beneath”. It is fitted with a luxurious Sleep+ Mattress and paired with the Uno Ottoman.

From the lush gardens and inviting gathering spots to the cosy and intimate private spaces upstairs, this refreshed abode represents a new chapter for the young family, immersing them in the heart of bustling Singapore while evoking a piece of their relaxed lifestyle back in Australia.
