They’re Malaysia’s sweethearts. The celebrity couple that have shared their love story with the whole country. But when they’re not on TV screens. Awal Ashaari and his wife Scha are at home, relaxing with their two girls Lara and Lila. 

Awal describes his personal style as “elegant with a touch of sophistication. A cross of modern contemporary with some form of minimalism.” The family recently moved into a new home and chose KING furniture throughout the house. 

“I fell in love with King furniture because of the functionality, and the beauty in every design,” says Awa. “It’s hard to find something so beautiful, but yet very practical and comfortable. I found all these with King.” 

Awal takes us into his home to share more about his style and furniture choices.

A mix of modern and classic

A self-proclaimed perfectionist, Awal is all about the details. While he shares a different interior style to his wife, they both agreed that their decor needed to be sophisticated and practical.  

Using this as the foundation, everything in their new home has been handpicked and curated by Awal and Scha. From the furniture to the art pieces, tableware and lighting, the home truly reflects their unique personal style. The result is a mix of modern and classic that Awal is particularly proud of. 

“I appreciate uniqueness, bold styles and always want to appear different from the rest,” he explains. “This applies to my home design as well, where I want nothing but the best selection of furniture, art and decorations. It has to be different, one of a kind yet still serve a purpose.” 

Throughout the home you’ll find a mix of detailed carpentry designs with modern-clean cut furniture for a balanced interior. 

“I love Parisian vibes and also fancy the clean, straight Scandinavian look,” he says. “This marriage creates that warm, cosy feeling with modern contemporary ambiance.”

The family room

The heart of the home, the design ethos behind Awal’s family room was to create a space where the family could spend quality time together. It needed to be bright, comfortable and welcoming.  

Awal and Scha chose the Max Sofa, primarily for its strong build and luxurious comfort.  

“I fell in love with the fluffiness of this sofa,” recalls Awal. “The moment I sat on this sofa, I knew that the whole family would have a great time together resting, watching movies and growing on this Max Sofa. The modularity of this sofa is a great plus point to me.” 

But it was also the appeal of the modularity that sealed the deal for Awal. The flexibility of being able to move the pieces around into different arrangements suited the family’s needs. 

“The beauty of the Max sofa is that it is ideal for both small and big spaces,” he explains. “We also really like its clean-cut silhouette, which matches the family area where we have wainscoting all over. This sofa neutralises the whole look and adds a modern touch to the whole area.”

The outdoor area

For Awal, the design of the outdoor space was key. He wanted it to be a place for his two young girls to get outside and play. It also needed to be somewhere for the adults to enjoy downtime and entertain friends. 

“We wanted it to be more resort-like, so that the kids can spend more time under the sun rather than be stuck indoors,” he recalls. “We would also use it as a space to host friends and family – whether it’s for tea or a BBQ session.” 

But Awal acknowledges that finding the right outdoor furniture with the resort aesthetic he was after wasn’t easy. Until he found the Jasper Outdoor sofa and Quay Outdoor Dining. 

“King really brought new life to outdoor furniture,” he says. “What you usually have inside is now available for the outdoors, with the King outdoor range. It’s perfect to own your dream sofa set, so beautiful inside and outside the house. One of our selected pieces is the Jasper Outdoor, and it’s perfect in setting the resort look and feel we were going for.” 

They’ve now got the perfect outdoor space which they plan to test drive with lots of entertaining for Hari Raya.

The bedroom

The brief for Awal and Scha’s bedroom was a cosy, warm place where they could both relax after a long day. The Sleep+ Mattress was the obvious choice.  

“We had to go for the Sleep+ Mattress,” he says. “It was just the ticket to ensure we get a good night’s rest.” 

Awal has also been impressed by the modularity of Sleep+.

Now the home is complete, Awal and Scha are looking forward to sharing their thoughtful creation of furniture and decor with their friends and family. They wanted a home that was comfortable and relaxing. And that’s exactly what they’ve achieved.
